Parliamentary delegation of the Republic of Belarus takes part in the 117th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union

     The parliamentary delegation of the Republic of Belarus headed by Mr Gennady Novitsky, Chairman of the Council of the Republic National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, took part in the 117th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), which occurred in Geneva (Swiss Confederation). In the course of the Assembly parliamentarians from 125 countries addressed the most burning issues of today: combating international terrorism and human trafficking, ensuring human rights and freedoms and the position of migrants. The legislators adopted an emergency agenda item on human rights violations in Myanmar.
     Within the framework of the Assembly Mr Gennady Novitsky, Chairman of the Council of the Republic National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, presided over a sitting of the Eurasia Group, the coordinator of which is the Belarusian party. The members of the group developed common approaches to the points of the agenda. Additionally in the course of the sitting Mr Ibrahim Osman, Deputy Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent, presented a draft of “The guidelines for conducting and regulating international support within the country for rendering assistance and initial rejuvenating: instructions for governments of the countries wishing to develop or improve their national frameworks for producing international response to natural hazards and catastrophes”.
     A special attention was devoted to the issues concerning maximizing the efficiency of the IPU. The Belarusian parliamentarians took an active part in the discussion of these questions. The forum passed a resolution to introduce the position of Deputy Chairman of the IPU and assign it to coordinators of geopolitical groups. So the head of the parliamentary delegation of the Republic of Belarus became a Deputy Chairman of the IPU.
     Therewith by the decision of the IPU Governing Council the Collective Security Treaty Organisation was granted an observer status at this organisation.
     The parliamentary delegation of the Republic of Belarus met with the representatives of the parliaments of Venezuela, Iran, Ukraine, the RSA, India, Great Britain, Kenya, Belgium, Egypt, Libya, Cuba and Japan. The Belarusian parliamentarians considered with the representatives of parliamentary dimensions of the League of Arab States, the Western-European Union and the Association of South-East Asian Nations the prospects of cooperation on the international arena.
     The Secretary General of the National Group of the Republic of Belarus at the IPU took part in the work of the Association of Secretaries General of Parliaments.
