Standing Committees of the Council of the RepublicTo manage the law-making work, pre-consider and prepare issues referred to the competence of the National Assembly and also to exercise supervisory functions, the chambers elect Standing Committees, which are permanent bodies of the chambers. Each of the Committees has a chairperson, a deputy chairperson and members. The chairperson of a Standing Committee is elected through a secret vote by a majority of the full membership of the chamber. A member of the Council of the Republic may be a member of only one Standing Committee. The chairpersons of the chambers as well as their deputies may not be elected members of the Standing Committees.
All in all, there are five Standing Committees in the Council of the Republic:
The Standing Committee for Legislation and State Administration;
The Standing Committee for Economy, Budget and Finances;
The Standing Committee for Education, Science, Culture and Humanitarian Matters;
The Standing Committee for Demographic Security and Social Development;
The Standing Committee for Regional Policy and Local Self-Government;
The Standing Committee for Foreign Affairs and National Security.
The Rules of the Council of the Republic describe the competence of each of the Standing Committees.
In keeping with the Rules the chamber may decide to set up ad hoc committees, which would report to the members of the Council of the Republic on their work.
