Second World Conference of Speakers of ParliamentsOn September 7-9, 2005 the Chairman of the Belarus National Assembly Council of the Republic Mr. Gennady Novitsky participated in the 2nd World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments, held in New York under the aegis of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the United Nations.
The key issues discussed on the Conference included parliamentary dimension in UN activities, UN reform in the light of new threats and modern challenges, aspects of international security and enhancement of the role of parliaments in the consolidation of democratic institutions.
Speaking at the plenary meeting, Mr. Gennady Novitsky mentioned a noticeable contribution of Belarus in creating a sound system of global security by withdrawal of nuclear weapons from its territory. He also called upon parliamentarians from all over the world to join efforts in fighting terrorism, illegal migration and illicit drug trafficking.
In the course of the conference the Head of the upper Chamber of the Belarusian Parliament met with Mr. Jan Egeland, Under-Secretary-General of the UN for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator. Mr Gennady Novitsky expressed gratitude to UN leaders for their assistance in minimizing the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster and stressed the importance of further cooperation in this area.
Besides Mr. Gennady Novitsky met with Mr. Boris Gryzlov, Speaker of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, Mr. Pier Ferdinando Casini, Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament and with Mr. Geert Versnick, Chairman of the Twelve-Plus Group, the candidate to the position of the IPU President from the Belgian Parliament. During those meetings the issues of bilateral and inter-parliamentary cooperation were discussed |
