Lyudmila Postoyalko has met with the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General for HIV and AIDS in Eastern Europe professor Lars O. KallingsOn October 3, 2006 Mrs. Lyudmila Postoyalko, Chairperson of the Council of the Republic Standing Committee for Demographic Security and Social Development, met with the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General for HIV/AIDS in Eastern Europe professor Lars O. Kallings.
Senator Lyudmila Postoyalko said that the Republic of Belarus effectively and consistently pursues a policy of preventing and treating HIV/AIDS on the basis of the relevant legal framework. She stressed the need for state authorities, non-governmental and other organizations to unite efforts in the fight against AIDS. She added that to prevent the spread of the disease among young people it would be just as important to work in close contact with young people themselves.
Professor Kallings gave a high assessment to the effort that the Parliament and Government of the Republic of Belarus undertake in the sphere of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment. He also said that in this respect Belarus might serve as a model for other states of Eastern Europe.
The parties also discussed international ventures in the field of HIV/AIDS launched under the UN auspices and Belarus’ contribution to them.
