Members of the Council of the Republic have met with the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Parliament of South AfricaOn October 20, 2006 the Chairman of the Council of the Republic Mr. Gennady Novitsky met with the parliamentary delegation of the Republic of South Africa  headed by the Speaker of the National Assembly Mrs. Baleka Mbete. Present at the meeting from the Belarusian side also were Mr. Nikolai Cherginets, Chairman of the Council of the Republic Standing Committee for Foreign Affairs and National Security, Mrs. Natalya Andreychik, Chairperson of the Council of the Republic Standing Committee for Legislation and State Administration, Mrs. Lyudmila Postoyalko, Chairperson of the Council of the Republic Standing Committee for Demographic Security and Social Development, and Mr. Ivan Avin, member of the Council of the Republic Standing Committee for Foreign Affairs and National Security. 
During the meeting the parties discussed issues pertaining to the development of relations between the two countries in the political and economic spheres, as well as Belarus-South Africa cooperation within the framework of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Non-Aligned Movement.
Gennady Novitsky spoke of the need to establish a parliamentary forum within the Non-Aligned Movement to make it an important element of the balance of forces in the international arena. The idea was welcomed by the South African parliamentarians.
Dwelling on the trade and economic relations between Belarus and South Africa, the Chairman of the Council of the Republic stressed the necessity for creating an appropriate legislative support.
The South African Speaker suggested organizing reciprocal parliamentary visits with a view to further discussing problems of bilateral cooperation.
At the end of the meeting Gennady Novitsky answered questions concerning minimization of the Chernobyl disaster aftereffects that were put to him by the South African MPs.
