On December 5, 2006 Mr. Nikolai Cherginets, Chairman of the National Assembly Council of the Republic Standing Committee for Foreign Affairs and National Security, Mr. Anatoly Malofeev, Chairman of the Council of the Republic Standing Committee for Regional Policy and Local Self-Government, leader of the Belarus National Assembly Working Group on cooperation with the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, and Mrs. Natalya Andreychik, Chairperson of the Council of the Republic Standing Committee for Legislation and State Administration and deputy leader of the Belarus National Assembly delegation to maintain contacts with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), met with a parliamentary delegation of the Republic of Turkey headed by Mr. Murat Mercan, leader of the Turkish delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the Organization’s Deputy President. Present at the meeting also was Mr. Vladimir Kruk, member of the National Assembly House of Representatives Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Links within CIS and deputy leader of the Belarus National Assembly Working Group on cooperation with the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.
During the meeting the parties discussed the status of the Belarus-Turkey inter-parliamentary relations, the existing bilateral commercial and economic links, as well as the prospects of furthering humanitarian contacts between the two countries. The parliamentarians stressed the high level of the inter-state cooperation in all spheres of activities and expressed reciprocal interest to keep it up.
The sides also focused on issues of cooperation in the framework of PACE and came to a conclusion that the Organization’s policy of isolation pursued in relation to the Republic of Belarus has no future. Therefore, enhancement of bilateral contacts aimed at encouraging dialogue between PACE and Belarus was deemed imperative.
