A delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus participated in the first part of the 51st session of the Assembly of the Western European Union

On June 13 – 16, 2005 a delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus headed by the Chairman of the Council of the Republic Standing Committee for Foreign Affairs and National Security Mr. Nikolai Cherginets participated in the first part of the 51st session of the Assembly of the Western European Union (AWEU) — Inter-Parliamentary Assembly for European Security and Defence held in Paris. The invitation to participate in the session came from Mr. Stef Goris, Chairman of the AWEU.
Addressing the audience the leader of the Belarusian parliamentary delegation informed the session participants of the measures adopted by the Republic of Belarus to contribute to regional and international security.
Mr. Cherginets invited international parliamentarians to support our country’s initiatives aimed at establishing a nuclear-free zone in Central and Eastern Europe and drawing a Platform of Action to ensure better regional cooperation in the field of cross-border control, prevention of illegal migration as well as combating weapons, fissile, chemical and biological materials trafficking. He also pointed out the threats posed by the chemical weapons dumped in the Baltic and North Seas and called on the European states to urgently join their efforts in eliminating the threat. He went on to say that the Belarusian side was open for active cooperation with the AWEU as for the solution of all these problems.
During the session the Belarusian parliamentary delegation had meetings with the AWEU Chairman Mr. Stef Goris, the organization’s Secretary General Mr. K. Kameron, parliamentary delegations of Moldova and Ukraine. The parliamentarians also met with French Senator Mr. S. Vincent. Among the issues raised during the meetings were those concerning Belarus’ cooperation with the AWEU, the establishment of relations between the Organization of Collective Security Agreement and the AWEU, furthering of inter-parliamentary cooperation with legislatures of Moldova, Ukraine and France. The parties in the meetings agreed to continue and expand bilateral and multilateral contacts.
