Gennady Novitsky meets with Andrea Rigoni, Vice-President of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly, Rapporteur on Belarus October 17, 2007 Mr Gennady Novitsky, Chairman of the Council of the Republic National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, met with Mr Andrea Rigoni, Vice-President of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE), Rapporteur on Belarus, within the framework of the working visit to Belarus of the latter. Mr Cherginets, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Council of the Republic for Foreign Affairs and National Security, and Mrs Natalia Andreichik, Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the Council of the Republic for Legislation and State Administration, Deputy Head of the Delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus to Maintain Contacts with PACE, Deputy Head of the Working Group on Cooperation with the Parliament of the Italian Republic also took part in the meeting. Mr Aleksandr Arkhipov, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the House of Representatives on Legislation and Legal and Judicial Issues, Head of the Working Group on Cooperation with the Parliament of the Italian Republic was present at the meeting as well. In the course of the meeting Mr Andrea Rigoni said that the primary purpose of his visit to Minsk was an attempt to jointly elaborate ways to develop a mutually acceptable dialogue between Belarus and PACE. In addition, he stressed that the policy of iron curtain pursued by PACE in respect of the Republic of Belarus was advantageous neither for the European party nor the Belarusian one. Mr Rigoni also talked about striving to foster friendly and trust-based relationships. Mr Gennady Novitsky spoke about the readiness to cooperate with PACE basing on equitable dialogue and mutual respect. The Chairman of the Council of the Republic noted the significance of the progressive advance towards each other and suggested considering a possibility to invite Belarusian parliamentarians to PACE sessions. The parties discussed the prospects of altering the legislation of the Republic of Belarus as for the administration of the supreme measure of punishment, the possibilities of establishing an information office of the Council of Europe in Minsk and also the issues concerning the relationship of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus and PACE.
