Boris Batura had a meeting with the Ambassador of the Republic of India

On 17 December 2008 Mr Boris Batura, Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, had a meeting with Mr Rajendra Kumar Tyagi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of India to the Republic of Belarus. The meeting took place in the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus on the occasion of completion of the Ambassador’s mission in Minsk. Ms Nina Mazay, Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the Council of the Republic for Foreign Affairs and National Security, and Mr Anatoly Novikov, Deputy Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the Council of the Republic for Education, Science, Culture and Social Development, also took part in the meeting.

Chairman of the Council of the Republic thanked Mr Tyagi for his substantial contribution to the development of interaction between Belarus and India in political, trade-economic and humanitarian spheres. A visit of the President of the Republic of Belarus to India took place last year. It gave a significant impetus to the cooperation of our countries. Belarusian-Indian interparliamentary contacts have become more dynamic. The goods turnover volume between the two countries has grown threefold. Mr Batura underlined that it was planned to raise it up to USD 500 million by 2010.

The Ambassador of India noted in his turn that the cooperation between Belarus and India had significantly extended during the past three and a half years. He thanked the Government and the Parliament of the Republic of Belarus for assisting him during his stay in our country. According to Mr Tyagi it is possible to achieve a 50 per cent higher volume of goods turnover between the two countries than it was targeted. The prerequisites of it are the political will of Belarusian and Indian authorities, active development of the two countries and implementation of new projects in technology- and IT-related spheres.

The sides agreed to the necessity of intensification of economic links between Belarus and India in the context of the global financial crisis.
