Boris Batura received the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea

       On 22 December 2008 Mr Boris Batura, Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, received Mr Li Youn-soo, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea to the Republic of Belarus, at his request. Ms Nina Mazay, Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the Council of the Republic for Foreign Affairs and National Security, also took part in the meeting.

       The sides discussed the development of Belarusian-Korean cooperation in political, trade-economic, credit-investment and humanitarian spheres. The Chairman of the Council of the Republic noted that the development of the relations with the Republic of Korea was one of the priorities of the foreign policy of our country in the Asia-Pacific Region. He also underlined the importance of the development of bilateral interparliamentary contacts, including the format of groups on cooperation with the parliaments of both countries. Mr Batura extended an invitation to Mr Kim Hyong O, Chairman of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, to visit Belarus at his convenience. The Chairman of the Upper Chamber of the Parliament of Belarus positively described the development of the trade-economic links between Belarus and Korea and underlined that there were all necessary prerequisites for its more dynamic development. He proposed to intensify the bilateral investment cooperation and consider the possibility of construction of a Korean automobile factory in particular. Besides, Mr Batura spoke about the prospects of interregional cooperation of the two countries.

       The Ambassador of the Republic of Korea in his turn noted that the Republic of Belarus attracts Korean businessmen due to a number of favourable factors, especially the geographic location. He underlined that the official visit of Mr Sergei Sidorsky, Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus, to Korea in November 2007 contributed to the completion of the development of the bilateral cooperation legal-contractual basis. The Ambassador also expressed his willingness to exert every effort to develop the Belarusian-Korean links in all spheres.

       At the end of the meeting the sides agreed upon the practicability of establishing close links between the representatives of big-, medium- and small-scale business of the two countries.
