The meeting of Boris Batura with the parliamentary delegation of the Republic of Finland took place On 20 January 2009 a meeting of Mr Boris Batura, Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, with the members of the parliamentary delegation of the Republic of Finland headed by Mr Erkki Tuomioja, Chair of the Grand Committee of the Parliament of Finland, took place in the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus. Ms Nina Mazay, Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the Council of the Republic for Foreign Affairs and National Security, also took part in the meeting.
The Chairman of the Council of the Republic informed the guests that a very favourable situation had formed for extending the cooperation of the Republic of Belarus with European countries, building strong inter-parliamentary links and restoring the relations of our country with the European Union and the European Parliament in full measure. In addition to that Mr B.Batura noted the interest of the Belarusian side in cooperation within the framework of the Eastern Partnership initiative and voiced hope for full-scale participation of the Republic of Belarus in this program without preconditions. He thanked the Finnish side for their pragmatic approach to building the bilateral relations with the Republic of Belarus and expressed confidence that the meeting would facilitate their intensification in all directions.
Mr E. Tuomioja in his turn noted the positive dynamics of the development of the relations of our state and the European Union. The head of the delegation underlined that his country was ready to render help to the Republic of Belarus in European structures. He paid special attention to the development of links between the two countries within the framework of the Nordic Council and the Northern Dimension.
The participants of the meeting discussed the prospects of cooperation in the area of environmental protection and the opportunities of sharing experience in the sphere of local self-government.
