Mr Boris Batura had a meeting with the parliamentary delegation of the Republic of Armenia On 23 February 2009 a meeting of Mr Boris Batura, Chairman of the Council of the Republic, with the parliamentary delegation of the Republic of Armenia headed by Mr Hrayr Karapetyan, Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia, took place during the visit of the Armenian members of the Inter-Parliamentary Committee on Cooperation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus and the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia to Minsk. Ms Nina Mazay, Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the Council of the Republic for Foreign Affairs and National Security, Mr Anatoly Novikov, Deputy Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the Council of the Republic for Education, Science, Culture and Social Development, Deputy Co-Chairperson of the Inter-Parliamentary Committee on Cooperation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus and the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia, and Mr Anatoly Glaz, Deputy Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the House of Representatives for Human Rights, National Relations and Mass Media, member of the Inter-Parliamentary Committee on Cooperation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus and the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia, also took part in the meeting.
The Chairman of the Council of the Republic underlined the urgency of the third Inter-Parliamentary Committee sitting topic — the parliaments’ role in maintaining energy security in the Republic of Belarus and the Republic of Armenia. He dwelt upon the measures in this sphere taken in the Republic of Belarus and noted the systematic work conducted in accordance with the Republic of Belarus Energy Security and Energy Independence Enhancement Conception for 2006 — 2010. He informed the guests about the construction of an atomic power plant in our country.
Mr Boris Batura underlined the necessity of raising bilateral goods turnover and creating joint ventures in the context of financial and economic crisis. The Chairman of the Council of the Republic proposed to make a wider use of Belarusian and Armenian parliamentarians’ resources for intensification of trade and economic links.
Mr Hrayr Karapetyan in his turn expressed interest in strengthening bilateral inter-parliamentary contacts and extending interstate cooperation in various fields. He proposed to organize an international conference on Belarusian-Armenian regional level cooperation. Mr Karapetyan agreed to the necessity of raising bilateral goods turnover with regard to Armenian needs in construction equipment.
A lot of attention during the meeting was given to the development of local self-government system in the Republic of Belarus and the Republic of Armenia and to the interaction of the two countries in the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, where the Council for Cooperation of Local Self-Government Bodies at the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus was granted the observer status.
The visit of the parliamentary delegation to Minsk will last until 25 December.
