Mr Boris Batura had a meeting with the delegation of the State Council of Oman On 25 May 2009 Mr Boris Batura, Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, had a meeting with the delegation of the State Council of the Sultanate of Oman headed by its Chairman Mr Yehya Bin Mahfooz al-Manthari. Mr Anatoly Rubinov, Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Republic, Mr Yevgeny Smirnov, Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the Council of the Republic for Legislation and State Administration, and Mr Aleksandr Shakutin, member of the Standing Committee of the Council of the Republic for Foreign Affairs and National Security, also took part in the meeting. The sides discussed a wide range of issues — the state Belarus-Oman inter-parliamentary cooperation, interaction of our countries within international structures, prospects for the development of bilateral trade-economic, scientific and technical, humanitarian links and the links in the sphere of sport, tourism etc.
Mr Boris Batura underlined that Oman was our strategic partner among the Gulf States. The relations between the two countries have been actively developing recently. The Republic of Belarus considers the possibilities of trade and investment intensification, and the ways of strengthening cultural and tourist links with Oman, as well as establishing educational cooperation. There are representatives of almost all areas of activity among the members of the Council of the Republic — education, science, culture, industry and agriculture. Their potential can be used for developing bilateral relations (and in the first place their economic component) of the Republic of Belarus and the Sultanate of Oman.
The Chairman of the Council of the Republic underlined our country’s interest in further strengthening of bilateral inter-parliamentary contacts. Cooperation within the framework of international organizations (in particular Inter-Parliamentary Union) allows to work out a consolidated position during the discussion of major world problems. In particular, the Republic of Belarus is interested in Omani support of the Belarusian amendment to the Kyoto Protocol. Effectiveness of this amendment will significantly increase the power of the Kyoto Protocol as an international agreement, which will allow our country to make a substantial contribution to overcoming of global climate change aftermath.
The Chairman of the State Council of the Sultanate of Oman in his turn stated that the friendly relations with the Republic of Belarus were highly appreciated in his country. He invited Mr Boris Batura to make an official visit to the Sultanate of Oman. He also voiced an interest of the Omani side in further development of political and economic contacts (in the spheres of education, sport and tourism in the first place).
