Boris Batura had a meeting with the delegation of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine

      On 29 June 2009 Mr Boris Batura, Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, had a meeting with the delegation of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine headed by its Chairman Mr Volodymyr Lytvyn. Mr Anatoly Rubinov, Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Republic, Ms Nina Mazay, Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the Council of the Republic for Foreign Affairs and National Security, And Mr Ivan Kiyevets, member of the Standing Committee of the Council of the Republic for Regional Policy and Local Self-Government, also took part in the meeting. The sides discussed the questions of Belarus-Ukraine inter-parliamentary relations, interaction of the two countries within the framework of international organizations, prospects of bilateral relations in trade, economic, humanitarian and other spheres.

      Mr Boris Batura stated that the relations of the Republic of Belarus and Ukraine were based on clear principles — strengthening of friendship, developing of mutually rewarding links and extending of cooperation in the international arena. He noted that the two countries interacted in a constructive manner, which was proved by recent meetings at the high and the higher levels.

      The Chairman of the Council of the Republic underlined the interest of our country in further strengthening of bilateral inter-parliamentary contacts. Cooperation within international organizations (in particular Inter-Parliamentary Union, OSCE Parliamentary Assembly) makes it possible to work out a unified position while dealing with the most important global problems. The Republic of Belarus is interested in the Ukrainian support of the Belarusian amendment to the Kyoto Protocol.

      The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada stated in his turn that it is necessary to make every effort on the parliamentary level to make the cooperation between the two countries systematic and integrated. He noted that Ukraine and Belarus have a great potential of interaction in various fields, including agriculture, power-engineering etc.

      Boris Batura and Volodymyr Lytvyn discussed the joint actions within the framework of the participation in the Eastern Partnership Initiative as well as the general strategy of building relations with the EU.

      The visit of the delegation of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine will last until 30 June.
